Shastri could become India's full-time coach.
Anurag Thakur, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, has said that the Indian team director Ravi Shastri's contract has ended
after India's semifinal exit in the ICC World Twenty20 2016. However, Thakur, on Friday (April 1) added that the contract could be up for renewal if the high-profile Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, deems fit.
BCCI had signed a contract with Shastri till the end of the ICC World T20 2016 and it came to an end immediately after India lost to West Indies by seven wickets at the Wankhede stadium on Thursday (March 31). Shastri's contract, if renewed, will be of a full-time coach and not a team director.
"Ravi Shastri's contract has ended. We are looking at a full-time coach and the decision will be taken by the Cricket Advisory Committee. There won't be a team director and a full-time coach. It will be only one post and even Ravi's contract can come up for renewal," Thakur said.
When asked if Shastri, a popular choice among some of the senior players, would get a second term, Thakur said: "It will entirely be CAC's call. But it will be the post of a full-time coach. CAC has been asked to shortlist the names of the possible candidates for the post."
"The meeting of the CAC is expected to happen post April 3. It can happen before the start of the IPL [Indian Premier League] also. We will have to decide on the date," the BCCI secretary said.
Shastri was appointed as team director in 2014 after India lost the Test series against England 1-3. Under him, the Indian team won the ODI series in England, lost the Test series in Australia 0-2 and did not qualify for the final of the tri-series that followed.
However, the team did make it as far as the semifinals of the ICC World Cup 2015, and in the same year, the Virat Kohli-Shastri combo saw India clinch the Test series against Sri Lanka and defeat South Africa 3-0 in the four-Test series.
India had briefly occupied the top spot in the Test rankings while they also rose to the No. 1 position in T20Is during Shastri's tenure. However, the ODI series loss to Bangladesh, loss to South Africa in the limited-overs series in India and also the 1-4 loss to Australia in the ODIs Down Under happened with Shastri at the helm.
